Janine Opperman retired at sixty – and turned the experience into a roadmap for others.

She spent a career in South African broadcasting learning how the way you frame a story determines how people experience it. Meet the woman behind No Expiry Date Living.

From the stage to the third act – and everything in between.

Janine Opperman has spent her life telling stories. As an actress, a voice artist, a television producer, and a senior executive at one of South Africa’s most-watched channels she has always understood that the way you frame a story determines how people experience it.

At sixty, she found herself standing at a crossroads that no amount of professional experience had prepared her for. And she made a choice: she would not frame this as an ending. She would frame it as the opening of a third act.

The Power of Three Enterprise – and the philosophy of No Expiry Date Living – grew directly from that choice.

The Journey

Act one

The making of a storyteller

Janine’s career began in front of the camera — as an actress and voice artist, she learned early what it means to inhabit a role with authenticity and precision.

She understood performance not as pretence, but as a particular kind of truth-telling.

That instinct for authentic storytelling carried her through a career that evolved from creative performance into strategic leadership — developing not just creative expertise but the ability to see the bigger picture: what audiences needed, what content could do, and how to lead teams in building something that mattered.

She eventually became Senior Manager of Reality and Entertainment at M-Net’s kykNET channels — one of the most significant Afrikaans-language television brands in the country. A role that demanded everything: creative vision, commercial acumen, leadership under pressure, and the ability to navigate an industry that never stands still.

She gave it everything she had. And she was good at it.

Act two

The moment everything stopped

In August 2022, at the age of sixty, Janine’s employment contract reached its mandatory end. She had known it was coming. She had attended the financial workshops, met with the advisors, made the calculations.

What she had not prepared for was the emotional reality of the transition. The silence where structure used to be. The quiet that replaced the constant noise of a demanding career. The question — which arrived quietly and persisted: “Who am I now that the title is gone?”

She describes what followed as a catharsis — a profound emotional reckoning that was simultaneously one of the most difficult and most clarifying experiences of her life.

She was not alone in it. Through conversations with fellow retirees across South Africa, she discovered that what she was experiencing was not unusual. Behind the cheerful farewell speeches and the well-meaning retirement wishes, many people were navigating the same unspoken truth: they had not been prepared for this.

Not emotionally. Not mentally. And often — not financially either.

The decision that changed everything

Janine could have treated retirement as a conclusion. Many people do. The career ends, the pace slows, life contracts to fit the new circumstances.

Instead, she read Matthew McConaughey’s Greenlights — and found a single idea that reframed everything: have immortal finish lines. A ceiling on possibility is something we impose on ourselves. The road ahead has no predetermined end.

Then she got to work. She researched extensively. She interviewed retirees. She read the philosophy, the psychology, the science — and distilled everything she learned, and everything she had lived, into a framework, a book, and a practice.

Act three

No Expiry Date Living

The Power of Three Enterprise was founded on a deceptively simple insight: the third act of a professional life — the 30+ years that follow a career — deserves as much planning, intention, and investment as any other chapter.

Most people give it almost none.

The financial industry has the money conversation covered. What it consistently fails to address is everything else: the identity loss, the psychological transition, the question of purpose, the need for structure and connection, the challenge of designing a life that is genuinely worth living for decades — not just surviving. That gap is where Janine works.

Through her book The Retirement Roadmap, her workshops, her keynotes, and her private coaching sessions, she offers what the farewell party never does: a genuinely honest, practical, and at times warmly funny companion for one of life’s most significant transitions.

She is not a life coach in the generic sense. She is not a motivational speaker. She is a No Expiry Date Guide — someone who has walked every mile of this road herself, done the research, and developed a framework that gives direction.

Her approach is rooted in three lanes: Purpose, Health, and Tribe. Together, they form a roadmap for a third act that does not diminish what came before — but builds something genuinely new on top of it.

She is currently pursuing what she likes to call her “Doctorate in the School of Hard Knocks” — the real-world education that comes from living, learning, and navigating the third act of life with intention, honesty, and a great deal of Afrikaans stubbornness.

The Philosophy

Sixty is not a ceiling. It is a coordinate.

A specific point on a road that stretches much further than most people plan for. The dominant narrative around retirement – financially focused, decline-oriented, structured around an average life expectancy that most people will exceed – is not just incomplete. It is actively unhelpful. It prepares people for the end of something without giving them the tools to begin what comes next.

The third act, approached intentionally, is not a diminished version of what came before. It is something different – and in many ways, something better. Freed from the expectations and external definitions of a career, it is the first time in decades that many people have the genuine freedom to choose: who to be, how to live, and what to leave behind.

That freedom is extraordinary. And extraordinarily underused. No Expiry Date Living is about changing that — one roadmap at a time.

A personal note

In Janine's own words

“I spent more than thirty years in an industry I loved – and then it ended, faster and more completely than I'd imagined. The title went. The structure went. What followed was one of the hardest times of my life.

Through my own experience, and honest conversations with other retirees, I learned that almost no one is prepared for this transition.

That's why I wrote the book. That's why I coach, and why I speak. Not to offer easy reassurance, but what I wish someone had offered me: a genuinely honest map for the journey ahead with practical shortcuts.

If you're standing at that crossroads right now – I'm glad you found your way here.”
